What Shello is
A tutor that teaches from books we draft with AI and review by hand, one subject at a time — probability and statistics first — grounded in the text, cited as it goes, with a record of what you know that stays honest even when that's unwelcome. Anyone can read the books, free, without an account. The dialogue is what will cost money later, because it's what costs us money.
How it's run
Shello is a small company — one person, for now — funded by what it earns and controlled by nobody who needs it to grow fast. That isn't modesty; it's the design. Learning needs difficulty now for memory later, and a company measured on engagement is punished for shipping that. We aren't.
So the tutor can hold a question rather than hand over the answer, tell you when you aren't ready, give the whole library away, and count it a success when you leave because you learned the thing. That freedom lasts exactly as long as the ownership does, which is why it stays where it is.
The name
Newton is said to have described himself, near the end of his life, as a boy playing on the seashore, now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell, while the great ocean of truth lay undiscovered before him. That is what learning feels like from the inside: gathering, piece by piece, without pretending to command the whole.
拾貝 — shí bèi — is picking up shells. 貝 was also China's earliest money. What you pick up has value.
What we won't build
We won't summarise the chapter for you or draw the map for you. An artefact that does the thinking produces the feeling of understanding without the work that creates it — and the study techniques most apps automate are the ones the evidence rates lowest.
We won't teach medicine, law, finance or mental health, or advise you on your own situation in those areas. The failure we're avoiding is someone acting on a confidently drilled falsehood about their own body, money or legal position — so where a case is unclear, the tutor declines.
We won't measure ourselves by how long you stay. Session counts and time in the app aren't success here; whether you still know it in thirty days is.
